“To have never suffered would be to never have been blessed.”
-Edgard Allen Poe
If I had heard this quote a few years back, I would have responded: “How can someone have the guts to say that suffering is a blessing?
Suffering is when you lose yourself in a big hole and never find your way back again.
It is when you are drowning in divergent thoughts that you can never connect. When you are stuck overthinking superficial thoughts.
Neglecting yourself by staying in toxic relationships when you truly deserve healthy ones. Never realising what’s best for you. Underestimating yourself. Banishing self-love.
Risking your life for people who wouldn’t walk a mile for you.
Worrying about a far future whilst living in a hurtful past.
Always being demanding towards yourself.
Never thanking yourself for what you have accomplished up until now.
Feeling invaluable because an unworthy someone of your time left.
We are all going to suffer, either in our comfortable homes while lying on the sofa in the evening thinking or in the middle of the day through our risky lives. When the deepest regrets come knocking or in the afternoon when a single thought hits us like a bomb, causing our heads to die each time a little more.
Suffering is a life teacher. The one who never suffers never learns.
They will always be ignorant:
About the difference between healthy and toxic.
About the value of themself.
About what they truly deserve.
About the importance of their beloved ones.
The one who never suffers is not living. They are just existing.
They will always be vulnerable and easy to fool. Their life will be full of upsides. What’s the value of life if all there is in it is happiness? To live is to dance in the rainbow through the rain as well as in the shining sun.
Suffering teaches us to persevere in spite of all the hardships we encounter. How could you have enjoyed the good times without the hard ones?
Everyone keeps asking what the key to happiness is. Some have already been presented this key but have refused it. Others just not yet. In fact, the key to happiness is suffering.
How hard and painful it is for someone to be happy!
But it’s beautiful, isn’t it? How we hurt but never give up.
Being human means being conscious and aware of everything around us.
How hard our lives are!
How much suffering we endure just to make it out alive every day.
How many bridges we cross and how many skies we try to touch for our happiness.
How much suffering we take in. From the first thought that comes to our mind in the early dawn, that we should wake up to go to work because no one is going to do it for us; to the last thought late at night, when we realize how much we love someone but yet how we hate ourselves.
Our hearts are heroes because they can support this tough and tiring blessing which we call suffering.
Yes, M. Poe, suffering is essential. Without it, how should we experience the value of each thing and really learn how much of a blessing we all have?
