About Decisions

“You cannot decide your future, but you can decide your habits now, which will definitely define your future”

-Dr Abdul Kalam

I came across my twelve years old sister, and I noticed that my old aunt was asking her about her plans after she graduated high school. After a moment of hesitation, my sister looked at her with a stressful face, replying with the famous words: ”I don’t know”. She then went on to say that she was “going to be a lawyer. The most impressive reaction was my uncle’s; from across the room, he stated: “How many times do I have to tell you that you’ll never succeed in this country unless you graduate as a doctor?”

My sister winked at me and took me to our room, with shallowness in her eyes. Once out of sight, she said to me: “ What am I supposed to do with my life? Our aunt keeps on saying that a lawyer is a decent and noble profession, whereas our uncle insists on the fact that I’ll never succeed unless I’m anything other than a doctor. Father is brainwashing me to specialize in engineering, saying that the future of the country lies in the hands of engineers. All those talks and pieces of advice have got me confused about what I should do. There is constant pressure about which major to choose“.

I took a deep breath and rapped the following speech, without even thinking or pausing to breathe:

You know what? Some decisions are meant to be taken as fast as one possibly can.

You choose whether you should wake up at 7 am or at 10 am

You choose whether to pamper or neglect yourself

You choose whether to study or get cultivated

You choose to say yes endlessly or to stand up and actually say no

You choose to take care of your health or for it to be the last of your worries

You choose to be afraid of people’s reactions or to connect with them instead

You have to decide whether you want to depend on someone or be the master of your own life

You have to decide whether you want to please others or put yourself as a top priority

You have to decide whether you want to be the influenced or the influencer

You have to decide whether you want to be a doctor, an engineer or a lawyer. Whatever you choose, remember that mediocrity is not an option.

You have to decide whether you want to your own healer or rely on people to be your drug pills in order to cope with mental illness.

Whatever you choose, remember that mediocrity is not an option.

You have to decide whether you want to produce positive thoughts or rather negative ones

If you want to build a bright future on all scales or rather build one with unstable bases that comes crashing down each time windy obstacles show up

You don’t want to be people’s lawyer; you want to be your own lawyer:

It’s your choice to decide whether to keep a critical eye and evaluate good from bad or be the corrupted lawyer who follows orders and money.

You can also be an artist, a cinematographer, a dietitian, a psychologist, a chemist, a physician, or a businesswoman.

You choose whether you want to color your life or the one who let it fade to black and white.

You choose if your life will be a drama, a comedy, a science fiction or even a horror story.

You choose if you want to start a healthy diet, overeat or starve yourself.

You choose if you want to make your reactions (experiences) huge in order to create something new or without a particular sense leading to nothing new.

You choose if you want your movements (yourself) to be circular without going forward or linearly infinite without an ending point and always ready to go forward.

You decide whether to invest your money on mortal things or on your future projects in life.

You should make big decisions now, but do you think that anybody cares about your diploma if you don’t have skills and a good attitude towards your colleagues and the obstacles of your every day at work.

Ignore everyone who tries to brainwash you because we live in a society that enjoys doing as such. Be the brainwasher of your own mind.

Small important decisions now will build you and help you decide when the time comes for the bigger ones.

If you don’t build yourself up first and understand your true self by focusing on yourself, how are you supposed to make the right decision?

Don’t forget that the amount of passion and work you put into anything in this life will determine how much your success in the future, not your choice of major.

Be aware of the right things and don’t be influenced by anything or anyone
